LISTEN: Sunday mix #5, Gypsy invasion

...you know I had to catch a Ukrainian circus while I was here.

Like a grizzly bear riding a bicycle into your living room, I bring this gypsy punk mix. As written here before:

"The genre defies genre-ization by nature; it's multicultural and contradictory to the point of confusion. But self-styled spokesman Eugene Hütz (Gogol Bordello) has stated that it's roots lay with the Romy people of the Ukrainian Carpathian mountains. From there it explodes into the Balkans, Israel, Hungary and wherever else musical instruments are made available."

And the music that follows is some of the most invigorating since the mid-seventies when John Lydon embraced the safety pin. Give it a chance if you haven't already:

Thanks for the introduction to Bukowski...that sad, defeated voice. Does performance poetry have to be written to be spoken?
And the reintroduction to Paul McCarthy. He is so close to the bone with societys' taboos.
I enjoy your postings every day. Keep it up.

thought about his for a minute, and rap battles came to mind, standing out as impromptu poetry performances

Fantastic music!
There is a "club" called Kafee Burger which holds a monthly event called- Russendisko. It is in Berlin where i'm visiting in April, plays all of this kind of lovely stuff ...
(Gogo bordelo play there sometimes- described as immigrant punk!)
Apparently the writter Wladimir Kaminer was the founder and he still reads some of his work before the dancing starts! You should have a browse if you dont already know about this!(he wrote-everything's illuminated)

PS...
Thanks for being my first follower...very happy!
If you sent me an address i would post you some zines.

hi unhappy cat,

'immigrant punk' makes more sense (and is less offensive).

nice that you are going to kafee burger!

no need to thank me for subscribing to your blog... it is some sort of religion for me to support other diy artists. just feels right. plus your shit is cool :)

i am on the move now with no address but will take you up on your offer when i settle for a little while...

I love it! You cannot help but want to dance! I love the more traditional Roma music as well- some of the best musician in the world are Lautari, Roma.
